Design Database Workshop: Overview & Welcome

Description and Objectives

During this two-week online workshop (February 17-28, 2003), we will discuss and refine design principles for educational software. The workshop includes two strands:

  • General — exploring design principles in a variety of educational technology-based applications, with different expert groups focusing on their area of research and development. Facilitator: Yael Kali. Discussant: Marcia Linn.
  • Ubiquitous Computing — focusing on design principles for ubiquitous computing. Facilitator: Michele Spitulnik. Discussant: Bob Tinker.

Contributors share software features and collaboratively create new design principles that synthesize findings in diverse research groups. The ideas constructed in this process will be credited to you and published as a set of exemplar design principles in the Design Principles database (http://wise.berkeley.edu/design).

Workshop Participants and How to Work in Teams

We have a wonderful group of 13 teams of designers: 11 from various universities and institutions in the United States, and two teams from different universities in Israel. Some of the teams are mentor/mentee pairs (or triplets), and some are colleague teams. We would like each team to work together in deciding which software features to present during the first week of the workshop, and which principles to suggest during the second week. Each team will decide on its own how to manage the teamwork (who should post what, etc.) Whether you are a mentor, mentee, individual or colleague, we encourage you to take advantage of this workshop and interact freely with all workshop participants!

Attendance

Our suggested model of attendance is that mentors spend about 1-2 hours and mentees spend 3-5 hours per week on workshop activities. All participants are most welcome to participate in both of the 90-minute telecons. Please plan for at least one representative of each team to attend each of the telecons.

How Do We Communicate?

Assignments

All activities are described in detail in the Assignments section, and provide links or directions to where the activity takes place.

Discussion Board

All of our online discussion in Blackboard will occur in the Discussion Board section. Each activity will have a specific Discussion Board Forum. Look for the Forum that goes with each activity. There are also optional Forums for additional conversation, including a coffee corner, a place to discuss the Design Principles database interface, and a place for questions about the activities.

Design Principles Database

During the workshop we will be visiting the CILT Design Principles database. Links to the database will be provided in Blackboard.

Teleconferences

Finally, critical communication will occur during the Teleconferences. Times for the teleconferences are posted above in the Activities Overview section of this document and also in the Assignments section of the workshop. We hope that at least one member of each pair will participate in the Teleconferences. The Teleconferences will help all workshop participants understand the software features you contribute as well as the design principles you generate. We look forward to seeing you online and hearing your voice!
